Røros
Røros, which can be reached by car or by train, is a town like no other. This old mining town is so unique that it earned a spot on the UNESCO World Inheritance List. It’s one big open-air museum. According to an ancient legend, Røros owes its existence to farmer/hunter Hans Olsen Aasen. In 1644 he shot a reindeer buck. Just before the animal collapsed, it kicked a shiny glistening rock into the sunlight. Two years later, copper was first discovered here...
This town breathes authenticity. When strolling around you will pass interesting old wooden buildings, authentic farms with ‘Aasen Gård’ being the oldest one, and a gorgeous church featuring a 250 year-old organ. You can also pay a visit to the Røros museum and a descent into the old mine is an absolute must. Shoppers will also feel right at home in Røros. Interesting are the many shops that display traditional Norwegian craftsmanship such as glassblowing, woodcarving, pottery, painting, silverware etc.
